Berlin affordable again

Berlin has to be affordable for everyone again. To live, in everyday life and through good work. We are building 100,000 new flats in partnership with housing cooperatives, state-owned and private companies. To do this, we are launching a major housing construction programme and ensuring that planning permission is granted more quickly. We’re turning empty offices into new living space and building more flats for apprentices.

We’re putting an end to the rent madness. With its rent register, Berlin is setting an example: We record all flats and tenancy agreements and ensure transparency. Through the rent control authority, we systematically tackle rip-off rents, vacant properties and illegal holiday let properties. Anyone charging rents that are in breach of the law will soon have to reduce them. With a legally sound rent cap, we can put a stop to the spiral of rising prices.

A strong economy and good jobs – that is the foundation for an affordable life. We are developing Berlin into Europe’s number one hub for innovation, bringing EXPO 2035 to Berlin and promoting economic growth across all sectors. We are promoting culture and science, as they are crucial to the positive development of our city. We are working to boost employment in Berlin and fighting to save every job that is at risk. We are strengthening collective bargaining coverage and fair wages, and making public procurement subject to social standards.

Berlin: a family again

We’re making Berlin the most family-friendly city in Europe. For us, family means diversity: Whether you’re a single parent, a couple, queer, part of a blended family, young or old.

We champion free education for all – from nursery to university. We provide free school lunches and a student travel pass. We give young people a culture card and help to enhance their cultural education.
We are investing in nurseries, schools and youth services, and providing more staff, modern buildings and better facilities. Every child should have the same opportunities, regardless of their parents’ financial circumstances. We are strengthening democracy education in schools.

The health and safety of our children is our top priority. We are reintroducing a 30 km/h speed limit and traffic-calming measures around nurseries and schools. We ensure that there are clean and modern playgrounds in all boroughs. We are introducing a ban on mobile phones in primary schools.

Parents need a break too: through reliable childcare, good working conditions and affordable housing. Families should not be forced out of their neighbourhoods, but should be able to live well in Berlin. This applies to single people as well, of course. We are all one family.
